Two Packs of CBD Seeds, Followed From Breeder to Jar
Place two packs of CBD seeds next to each other, one labelled 1:1 and the other 20:1, and the two look the same: the same breeder’s packaging, the same seed count, seeds which nobody’s eye can tell apart. Run them side by side and they part ways from the very first step and do not meet again. The cause is one single gene, and the easiest way to see what it does is to track the two packs through every step both go through: the breeding that produced them, the seed, the seedling, the flower tent, the harvest, the jar, the lab bench and the law. The ratios quoted as examples throughout are drawn from the range at https://calmcbdseeds.com, which goes 1:1, 2:1 and 20:1 and a highest line at about 30 to one; the genetics is the same regardless of which shop the seeds come from.
Before the Seed Exists
Cannabis settles if it will make THC or CBD at one locus on the genome. The gene there exists in two versions: one builds the enzyme that turns the shared precursor into THCA, the other the enzyme that turns it into CBDA. Each plant holds two copies, one received from either parent, and the combination sets the chemotype. Two THC copies give a THC-dominant plant. Two CBD copies make a CBD-dominant one. One of each makes a balanced plant, since the two versions are codominant and not one of them overrides the other.
The balanced pack was bred by crossing two balanced plants, both holding one copy of each version. The CBD-dominant pack was bred by crossing two plants which each carry two CBD copies and no THC copy between them. That one difference at the cross decides all that follows afterwards, and it is already in the seed long before it is packed.
Stage Two: Inside the Seed
Cross two balanced plants and the offspring sort out by the oldest rule in genetics: a quarter get two THC copies, a quarter get two CBD copies, half inherit one of each. In a pack of 10 seeds that works out to, on average, two or three THC-dominant seeds, around two CBD-dominant seeds, and five true balanced ones. The pack is labelled by its parents, and in the case of half its seeds the label is accurate; in the case of the other half it is a description of something else. Calm CBD Seeds states the expected split on every balanced pack, which means the buyer sees ahead of sowing that a share of the plants will depart from the stated ratio.
The CBD-dominant pack has no such spread. Every seed received a CBD copy from each parents, each plant will be CBD-dominant, and the ratio on the foil applies to every one of them, within the ordinary variation in the amount of much total cannabinoid an individual plant produces. Breeders say such lines « breed true » for chemotype; the phrase refers to exactly this lack of surprise.
Stage Three: The Seedling Tray
Here the two packs appear alike again, and the resemblance holds longer than many growers assume. Chemotype shows no trace on a seedling. Leaf shape, vigour, internode spacing and the speed of growth rate are controlled by other genes entirely, and the different kinds of plant in the balanced pack grow without any visible difference from one another and from every plant in the CBD-dominant pack.
The one practical difference at this stage comes from lineage not chemotype. Strains with recent hemp genetics, and that covers some older CBD-dominant lines, tend to grow taller and fill out less. A well-worked 20:1 line behaves like a normal modern hybrid; a early-generation one may still shows the field in its frame. Neither habit says anything about the ratio to come.
Frost, Smell and the Wrong Conclusions
In flower the two packs start to offer clues, and the majority of the clues mislead. Trichome density is the usual one a grower reads, and it used to be a fair guide: early CBD-dominant lines carried markedly less resin than their THC cousins, a legacy from hemp. Current selections have mostly erased that gap, and a lightly resinous plant from the CBD-dominant pack may perfectly well test exactly where the foil promised. Trichome density and chemotype are carried on separate genes.
Smell is worse. The terpene profile lives on still other genes, so the THC-dominant plant sitting in the balanced pack can be identical to the balanced one next to it, and both can be indistinguishable to a plant from the CBD-dominant pack. People who try to separate a balanced pack by nose at week eight are guessing, which is not any better than not unsorted at all.
One Place CBD Is More Forgiving
Here the two packs differ in a way that benefits the grower of the CBD-dominant pack and also the CBD-dominant plants sitting in the balanced pack. CBDA degrades rather slowly than THCA, so a CBD-dominant plant allowed a week past its peak retains the bulk of its cannabinoid load, whereas a THC-dominant one under the same neglect has by then begun shedding THC to CBN. The cloudy rules nonetheless applies; it holds on account of the terpenes, which fade on any plant whatever the chemotype, and a late, over-dried CBD flower tastes of very little whatever the test number says.
Why Each Plant Gets Its Own Label
The CBD-dominant pack goes into one jar. Every plant from it holds about the same ratio, and blending them alters nothing worth measuring. The balanced pack cannot be handled the same way. Blend its 10 plants in a single jar and the result become a mixture that nobody’s foil could have predicted, skewed by which plants grew most, and nothing on a subsequent test can untangle the plants that went in.
The habit that saves the trouble is almost tedious: harvest the balanced pack plant by plant, dry each apart, number each, and try each one plant at a time rather than after the crop is mixed. It is the only stage in the whole process at which the three chemotypes of plant in the balanced pack can yet be told apart short of a laboratory, and then only because every one is still in its own bag.
What a Certificate Shows
Submit a sample from every jar to a laboratory and the two packs at last are legible. For the CBD-dominant pack the reports come back grouped tightly near the stated ratio, differing mostly in total cannabinoid content rather than in proportion. For the balanced pack they come back in three clusters: a few plants with almost all THC, some with almost all CBD, and the rest somewhere near one to one. No part of that pattern is a defect; it is the bench cross written out as numbers.
Over-the-counter test kits are sold for growers who cannot reach a lab, and most detect whether THC is there but not how much. That is enough to separate the THC-dominant jars out of a balanced pack and insufficient to put a ratio to the rest, and that suits the most frequent use: finding out which of the ten jars is going to catch out a guest.
Stage Eight: The Border
The last stage at which the two packs diverge is in law, and it catches growers who thought « CBD » was shorthand for « hemp ». The majority of countries classify hemp by a THC limit, a small fraction of a percent of dry weight, with the exact number differing by country and year to year. A plant from the CBD-dominant pack making twenty percent CBD at twenty to one at the same time produces around one percent THC, which is several times above the majority of limits. Compliant cultivars are selected to hold total cannabinoid output low so the THC fraction stays below the line at harvest; CBD flower lines are selected for rich output and let the THC scale with it. A seller that offers only a ratio is selling a flower line; a grower who needs a compliant crop should look for a tested THC percentage at harvest and buy nothing that does not show one.
Past the threshold issue, the word on the foil alters nothing about the law on the seed itself. Where owning cannabis seeds is lawful and germinating them is not, the balanced pack and the CBD-dominant pack fall in the same position as any other pack. Where the plant is permitted without restriction, the decision between them is a matter of preference and nobody else’s. No part of this page is legal advice, and the law which applies is the one in the place the seed will be sown, rather than the one in the place it was bought.
